Go To Church, Just In Case…

11 01 2008

On a number of occasions I have clashed with my Global Warming believing friends. We have been through a number of various heated arguments and every time I made the same conclusion – ideology cannot be easily countered with fact. It takes a long time for it to work itself out. We can argue forever about Ice Cores and Urban Heat Islands but simplistic emotional arguments are not easily defeated with reason.

There is one particular argument that environmentalists deploy with great effectiveness. It goes something like this: “even if we can’t be certain that Global Warming theory is true, we should do something just in case it is”. This is usually said by highly educated, atheist secular types. Strangely the same people don’t venture to Church every Sunday just in case it turns out God exists. I think they should. This could be called the Religious Precautionary Principle.
